Root Gardens is a local Garden
Centre and Nursery located at 5440 Malden Rd. in Windsor, Ontario,
Canada. Servicing the public and local businesses in the
Windsor area since 2002, Grass Root
Gardens has converted many to the joys of perennial gardening.
The owners, Lisa Knowlton and Crystal Kotow-Sullivan believe
Grass Root
Gardens strength lies in their ability to provide their customers healthy
perennials and the information to care for them. They are
continuously researching new plants and growing techniques to give
their clients a great variety of choices. On every bench and in
every garden traditional
favourites
partner strikingly among the
new and most sought-after perennials.
Flower lovers have a choice of
over 1600 perennials for sale, many of which are featured in the
over twenty display gardens on the property. Because of Grass Root
Gardens diversity, Canadian
Gardening Magazine often lists
Grass Root
Gardens as a source to their readers.
Both Lisa and Crystal were born
and raised in the Windsor
Essex County area, so both are
part of the proud history of the cross border culture of
Windsor. Both were also
concerned and shaken by 911. What could their modest garden center
contribute?
An “O Canada Garden” of course!!
Every Canada Day a special Canadian will have a plant grown in the
“O Canada Garden” in their honour. The planning of the garden began
a year ago and the flowers planted had to reflect the honourary
Canadian selected. Since border issues were heating up Lisa and
Crystal thought the hard working men and women at the border should
be recognized for their hard work and dedication in a positive
light.
So, 5 months ago the roots of the
idea were literally planted; resulting in a beautiful pale yellow
and orange daylily with a red center that resembles our own Canadian
Maple Leaf. This daylily is aptly named “Canadian Border Patrol” and
will be planted proudly in Grass
Root Gardens “O Canada Garden”
